About Tina Medina

As a woman of Mexican indigenous ancestry born in the United States, I am compelled to make art about current issues through the viewpoint of people of color in the U.S. Our continued struggle to exist in this country motivates me to represent those who have suffered racism, bigotry, and xenophobia. Part of the experience I portray is how we try to place ourselves within a historical context that was never meant to include us.

My art making involves fibers, performance, assemblage, painting and drawing. I respond to fibers work such as embroidery because of the intimacy of the human hand involved in the creation. I  juxtapose soft materials with the harshness of the devastation of families being separated or in danger or destroyed. I weave flags together to show the complexity of belonging in Chicana identity and record voices to document the tenacity of a diverse community. My performance work contemplates  the stress, chaos, love, and resilience of women who work hard in U.S. society to keep family together and afloat.
