In this episode of AMOC Presents, Sangeet Millennium Ensemble brings their interpretation of a carefully curated repertoire of Sufi-themed songs. Since the 15th century, South Asian Sufi poets have written elegantly profound verses celebrating the search of the human heart to find divine love in one's own soul, which mirrors that of one's fellow humans. These verses, carried through the centuries on the wings of musical compositions, continue to be sung, retold like stories, ever fresh and uplifting. Sangeet Millennium ensemble blends layers of tradition with innovation, fusing the sung verses in Punjabi, Urdu, and dialects of Hindi, with the instrumental voices of sitar and saxophone, supported by harmonium and tabla.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sangeet Millennium Ensemble is a collective that presents South Asian music for the world, both traditional and new. A fluid, inclusive configuration of musicians always open to creative collaboration, the ensemble often blends its foundational music seamlessly with jazz and other world musics. Meditating on the unexpected, the sounds emitting from this collective have been described as "elegantly vibrant."
The Ensemble’s goal is to inspire, educate, and entertain as we celebrate diversity through music and the performing arts.
Founded in 2006 and led by internationally acclaimed sitarist and teaching artist Dr. Amie Maciszewski, the Sangeet Millennium Ensemble was selected among the Top Ten Best Performing Bands/World Music 2010-11 in the Austin Chronicle Readers' Poll. The project’s artistic work has received support from the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture, the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Elevator Project, Teatro Dallas, City of Austin Cultural Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, and Mid-America Arts Alliance, among others. The Ensemble has released three CDs, the award-winning “Shimmering” (2006), “Sangeet Safar” (2010), and “Pathways of the Soul/Ruhaani Manzilen/Moner Poth” (2016).
